Best Places to Go Ice Fishing in the Adirondacks
There are so many places to ice fishing in the Adirondacks that we had to limit it to our four favorites. Here’s your guide to the top spots.
Lake Champlain
A good spot to start is Lake Champlain. Some popular areas are Bulwagga Bay and South Bay. This lake has plenty of species to fish for, including salmon, northern pike, lake trout, and yellow perch. The area is also popular for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
Lake George
Known as the “Queen of American Lakes,”
Lake George is a local favorite for ice fishing opportunities. This is one of the best places to hook trout and salmon; you can even expect some perch and smelt. Be on the lookout for ice fishing tournaments if you are in a competitive mood, as the clear waters make it the perfect place to compete.
Long Lake
Known for the Ice Fishing Derby held every winter, Long Lake is great for catching smallmouth bass, northern pike, bullhead, and perch. This beautiful area will make you wish you had brought your camera to photograph your big catch and the scenery.
Shroon Lake
Held on the first full weekend of March, Schroon Lake also has its own Ice Fishing Derby. This lake has a wide variety of fish, including pike, pickerel, panfish, and more! Once you are done fishing, this lake is located close to our Lodging at Maple Leaf Motel and just a mile away from Schroon Lake Beach. It's the perfect spot to rest after a long day of fishing!

It was too hard only to pick four fishing spots in the Adirondacks, so here are some other spots if you're looking for a new place to get your catch of the day.
- Indian Lake: Famous for ice fishing, it provides trout and perch against a picturesque backdrop.
- Tupper Lake: Hosts the Tupper Lake Ice Fishing Derby and features numerous fish species.
- Lake Colby: A compact yet fruitful choice for ice fishing, especially suited for trout lovers.
